Description:

Introducing Kindle™ Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle. We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, you’ll find reading Kindle’s screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot, and is designed for ambidextrous use so both “lefties” and “righties” can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time. We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you’ll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read. With Whispernet, you can be anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you, wherever you are. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven’t read the book for tomorrow night’s book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you’re in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand. We’re very proud to introduce Kindle and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. - The Amazon Kindle Team

4Good reading device, but with some design flawAug 20, 2008
Overall this is a good device to reading books, magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc. Some of the kindle books are not formatted good enough especially ones with lots of images, charts, drawings, etc.

One of the biggest flaw I found is the design of the device, the next & previous page buttons are way too big, you can easily press it by accident. And the power buttons are on the bottom of the device, which make turning on/off a little awkward.

3What about the students?Aug 19, 2008
I think the kindle is a great product and a huge step up from the Sony ebook. I would purchase one in a heartbeat if it had college textbooks. College textbooks are expensive and heavy. It is impossible to fit the twelve college textbooks, that i am required to have for this upcoming semester, into my backpack. Even if the books did fit in my bag they would be too heavy for me to carry. College books are also very expensive. I often find myself spending hundereds of dollars each semester on books. Some of which a never even end up using. I would absolutley love to buy all my college textbooks and store them on the kindle. I feel that this piece of technology would be well worth the money if I could use it for school. I am sure that many other students feel the same way.

5Love My KindleAug 19, 2008
I tend to expect "less than", especially when purchasing a new gadget. What I got was More Than I expected with the Kindle. It is simple to operate and does everything it is supposed to do.

It is lightweight & easy on the eyes. There are thousands of books to choose from. Look forward to more newspapers and magazines becoming available.

The Kindle has me reading again! I highly recommend it!

5Must Have for CommutersAug 19, 2008
It's not perfect, but in my opinion its the best new device since Tivo. Although not as flashy most new gadgets, it grows on you very quicikly. I was initially annoyed with how easy it is to accidentally turn pages, but got over it once I figured out how to hold it just right, which is no different that what is required of a new book, magazine or newspaper.

If you commute via public transportaion its great to be able to read the paper while standing and "turn pages" with one hand. Web-browser is more functional than I expected and does the job for reading news and sports scores. By turning off the wireless after downloading morning papaers it only needs a charge about once a week.

5How do I love thee? Let me count the ways....Aug 19, 2008
I don't often write a review no matter how thrilled I am with a product. I just don't take the time and I never feel that I can really articulate what my thoughts are in a way that satisfies me. When I do take a few minutes away from the other things that monopolize my time in life, you can bet it is because I am particularly pleased or impressed with something. Kindle has exceeded all of my expectations. No, it isn't perfect but it is close.

I've had my Kindle since June 6th and I take it with me everywhere. There have been days that I have gotten in my car to head to work and realized I left my Kindle on my nightstand. I can't leave without it, I head back into the house to get it before I leave. Only one other item in my life has ever gotten me to do that and that is my cell phone.

I admit that I love gadgets and I knew when I first heard about the Sony e-reader and the Kindle that I would get one of them. I choose the Kindle after reading the many reviews here on Amazon and watching the videos posted on the Kindle information page. Sony didn't have a chance once I realized what I could do with the Kindle. I had it shipped overnight and I greeted the FedEx man at the door before he rang the buzzer because I saw the van pull up outside. I immediately downloaded some samples and started reading. It really doesn't take long to get used to reading on a Kindle at all. Once you get a comfortable position that keeps your fingers away from the page forward and backward buttons, it is all gravy.

My favorite things about the Kindle are: the instant gratification of having a book in a few seconds; the ability to download samples before you buy - this has actually really broadened the types of books I read now; it fits in my purse easily and isn't as bulky as carrying around a thick hardcover; when someone mentions a book they enjoyed, I can download a sample so I don't forget the title later; if I read a book review that sparks my interest - sample download for later; the battery life off wireless is incredible; when my eyes are getting tired but I am just not ready to put the Kindle down, I can increase the text size; cost of a new release on Kindle is less expensive than the hardcover (mine has almost paid for itself already from this feature alone); I can look up the definition of an unfamiliar word while reading without ever leaving the page; etc etc - honestly I could go on and on about the things I adore about my Kindle.

A few things I'm not crazy about but can certainly live with: not all books are available on Kindle yet but Amazon has added the "tell the publisher you want this book on Kindle" button; the cover doesn't stay on but one velcro dot and I am good to go; the page buttons could be placed better but you get used to it quickly. Really, those are my only complaints and they are not deal killers, just little things I am willing to work around.

I sing the praises of Kindle all the time and have whipped it out to show people frequently. My boss recently left a copy of an article from Time Magazine on my desk about the Kindle because he thought of me when he read it.

Kindle has changed the way I read just like the iPod changed the way I listen to music and the DVR changed the way I watch TV.

Thank you Amazon, you have a customer for life as I no longer browse my local Barnes and Noble for new reading material as I get to carry an entire bookstore with me everywhere I go.
